The One Show’s Alex Jones’ sad reason for coming back from maternity leave ‘too quickly’

Alex is a proud mum to two

| Updated:

Alex Jones previously admitted she wished she had taken more time off following the birth of her child.

Alex – who is hosting The One Show today (August 19) – gave birth to Ted, now seven, back in January 2017. The TV favourite shares Teddy, and younger child Kit, four, with her husband Charlie Thomson

After her son’s arrival, Alex took three and a half months of maternity leave before heading back to work on the BBC early evening show. However, in 2018, she admitted that she went back because she was worried about the security of her job.

Alex Jones ‘insecure’ and ‘needed to get back to work as soon as’

Taking to Graham Norton on his Radio 2 show, Alex revealed the details of her returning to work after having a baby.

“To be fair, the BBC were really supportive, they were amazing. They said, you have as much time off, and when you’re happy to come back then we’ll be glad to have you,” Alex said.

She added: “But, you see, I’m just – because I respect and love the job, I worried, if truth be told. I worried that somebody would come in and be better, and to be fair the girls that did it were amazing.

“And I was just insecure, and thought, I need to get back as soon as I can. And in hindsight, yeah, I did go back too quickly.”

Alex on why she returned to work after birth of baby

The mum of one then revealed that not only does she wish that she had listened to friends and family when they suggested that she took more time off, but also that the fear of losing her job was all in her head…

“But you know what it’s like, telly is fickle and I went back because I didn’t want to lose my job. And, to be fair, the BBC said that is not going to happen,” Alex said.

But presenting a headlining TV show isn’t the only thing this amazing multi-taking mum can do… she has also written a new book!

Alex was chatting to Graham about her book ‘Winging It.’ The presenter admitted that because she was writing it in the moment, and not in hindsight, the book became a little more honest than she had bargained for…

“It’s a bit more candid and a bit more raw than I hoped it would be, but for that I’m glad as well.”

The One Show airs today (August 19) at 7:00pm on BBC One.
