The Tower is the latest crime drama on ITV and it got off to an intense start last night (Monday, November 8).
It stars Gemma Whelan as DS Sarah Collins who was called in to investigate the deaths of a veteran police officer and a young Libyan refugee.
It boiled up into a potential bent copper scenario, but what was really happening? Here are the questions we’ve been left with after episode one…
The Tower on ITV: What does DSI actually mean?
Sarah introduces herself at the very start of the episode of The Tower as DSI… but what does that mean?
“Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins,” she says to the officer at the crime scene.

“Director of Special Investigations, we’re taking over the scene.”
We’ve heard all kinds of police acronyms and initialisms in recent times (hello Line of Duty!), but DSI is a new one.
The Special Investigations unit is called into a case whenever a police officer has died. And when Sarah and her colleague Steve are called in, there’s friction aplenty.
What did Hadley Matthews say to Farah?
Attention soon turned to the dead officer – Hadley Matthews – and PC Lizzie Adama.
The beat cops investigated a complaint from a single mum, who alleged her Libyan neighbours were causing her and her young son grief.
As Lizzie looked for dad Younes in the Mehinnis’ back garden, PC Matthews talked to his daughter Farah in the hallway.
It was as if he already knew her, and she looked scared.
The fact that both Matthews and Farah ended up dead after falling from the tower block leads us to ask – did they know each other and how?
Why has Kieran Shaw got Lizzie’s phone and why did he throw a smokescreen over the investigation?
Matthews and Lizzie’s boss, Kieran Shaw, was content to throw a smokescreen over the entire investigation by telling Sarah that Lizzie had been investigating a sex trafficker and she was at risk.
However, it soon became clear that this was all a ruse.
Why? Shaw managed to get into Lizzie’s locker before Sarah and Steve could, because they were pre-occupied with the sex trafficker.
So the questions are… what’s on that phone and why did Shaw want to get hold of it?
Was Shaw having an affair with Lizzie?
Another question about Shaw.
At home, his wife made reference to the fact that his “pretty young” PC had gone missing.
They looked as though their relationship had seen better days, and the atmosphere was frosty between them to say the least.
So does she know something we don’t when it comes to her husband and Lizzie?
Does Shaw’s tattoo have any significance?
In one shot, the camera seemed to dwell on Shaw’s tattoo of a red rose on his right arm a little bit too long for our liking.
We know that in crime dramas, tattoos often mean membership of a nefarious or nasty group.
So could Shaw – who looks like a bent copper if ever we saw one – and his tattoo have greater meaning?
Why did Sarah Collins and her partner split?
While The Tower was a fast-paced procedural, we did get some backstory to Sarah later on in the episode.
She telephoned her ex, who had now had a baby.

It felt like Sarah was less than thrilled, and the recent split was used by her boss Bailie to have a go at her.
So we’re being nosey here – why did Sarah and her partner split?
Episode two of The Tower is on tonight (Tuesday November 9) at 9pm on ITV
