TV insiders say the aim of the landmark programme is to solve the Six O’Clock News presenter’s murder. It will hopefully provide new leads for police, as it tells the disturbing story of Jill’s death with help from archive footage, photos, and interviews.

A BBC source told the Mirror: “The documentary will have access to never seen before material from inside one of the largest and most complex murder inquiries ever conducted by the Metropolitan Police, and viewers will discover how events played out in real time.”

The film currently has the working title ‘The Murder of Jill Dando’ and producers will speak to friends, family and colleagues. It’s scheduled to be shown on the 20th anniversary of Jill’s death this April.

The face of popular shows like Crimewatch, Jill was only 37 when she was brutally executed on her own doorstep with a single bullet to the head on 26 April 1999.

Barry George, who lived half a mile away from Jill in Fulham, South London, was initially arrested and wrongly convicted of her murder in 2001. He was imprisoned for eight years before being acquitted in 2008.

There was fresh hope in the case last summer, when an ex-police officer claimed he had the name of Jill’s killer.

Speaking to presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on This Morning, Mark Williams-Thomas – who is now an investigative journalist – said he is determined to “finally solve this investigation”.

Mark explained: “I have now been given the name of the killer and that is my focus – on that individual. And that is my focus now – to try and finally solve this investigation. Because there is no doubt that Jill was murdered, assassinated, by a professional hitman.

“For an individual to get away with [this] for nearly 20 years… for an individual to have remained completely under the radar. The gun has never been recovered, nothing else has come into circulation. That shows you the quality of this person.”
