You Don’t Know Me on BBC One plot
The BBC tells us: “A young man from London stands in court, accused of murder.
“Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, he swears he’s innocent.
“But in the end, all that matters is… does the jury believe him?”
Hero is on trial for murdering a young boy, and there’s stacks of evidence against him – including blood under his fingernails, and firearms residue on his skin.
However, he is convinced of his innocence.
He attempts to argue that the murder is linked to a young woman who he first met on a bus two years ago and became romantically involved with, but who later went missing.
At his trial, Hero tells an incredible story about a woman called Kyra.
He tells the jury – and us viewers – that he loves her and that she got into terrible trouble.
He explains that he risked everything to save her and swears he’s innocent of the crime.
But in the end, all that matters is this: does anyone believe him?
Is BBC One’s You Don’t Know Me based on a novel?
You Don’t Know Me on BBC One is based on the novel by barrister and writer Imran Mahmood.
The series is adapted by Tom Edge, the man behind Vigil.
Author Imran says: “You Don’t Know Me is a story told by a defendant in a dock, giving a speech to the jury.
“He is one of the thousands of young men, strangers to privilege and opportunity, who are caught in the net of the criminal justice system each year.
“For those young men, the court is a system designed to deal with them but not to communicate with them. Not to understand them.”
The Guardian describes the book as “an original take on a courtroom drama that puts the reader in the position of the jury.
“Superb character-driven fiction. Masterful.”
The Sun says: “You’ll never guess the ending.”
